Plantar Fasciitis

Our feet are put through many stresses during the course of our normal day. Ankle and foot pain is common, and can be affected by age, footwear, as well as activities such as walking. Pain can be caused by reduced stability, reduced mobility, or reduced strength. Physical therapy can help.

Within the foot are many small muscles which give our foot form, stability, and strength. When muscles weaken the arch of the foot may drop, range of motion may be reduced, and we may feel stiffness and discomfort. This may cause compensation when walking, which in turn may cause more discomfort in the foot, knees, hips, or even our backs.

One common injury to the foot is plantar fasciitis.

Symptoms include pain at the heel, pain which is more intense with the first few morning steps when you get out of bed. This pain may lessen a bit as the day goes on, however, it may also intensify with prolonged standing and taking the stairs.

Aquacare’s Athlete of the Week: Gabi Konlian, Competitive Dancer

Gabi says, “I have been dancing for 14 years, and I started competing at the age of nine. As a competitive dancer, I attend regional competitions, conventions, and competed a solo at nationals last summer. In preparation for college, I have been attending numerous dance clinics at various universities such as Tribe 99, University of Miami, Wake Forest, and Ohio State. My goal is to dance on a D1 collegiate dance team that competes as well as does sideline performances. Dance medicine has been a transformative factor in my dancing. Not only has my strength, stability, and stamina improved, but I also love that I am able to focus on specific skills. My PT will break down each skill, whether it’s a 540 jump or a leg hold turn, and figure out exactly what is needed to improve. I have been in the dance medicine program for almost a year and I couldn’t be happier with how far I’ve come!”

In-Home Physical Therapy: Convenient, Effective, and Fun!

Tammy Warner of Milton has had a rollercoaster of health issues over the past several years. She was thrilled to learn she could receive physical therapy at home to avoid the pain of trying to drive or ride in a car. And, she learned physical therapy can be fun!

“They found a large aneurysm and I was one of only 42 people at the time to have a total endovascular arch repair with de-branching.”

Warner decided to have this procedure because it is less invasive than open-heart surgery.

“Again, I was not eligible for cardiac rehab, so I just came home,” she said. “I developed such a bad cough that my throat became swollen, and my back was so sore that I couldn’t sit in a chair or travel in a car.”

Then Warner learned about Aquacare PT PLUS, which provides physical therapy services in the home, workplace, fitness center, or community pool.

“I learned that Sharon, one of my neighbors, provided this service and I was thrilled to say the least,” Warner said.

Sharon Baxley, PTA, has over 30 years of PTA experience. She is a certified kinesiotaping practitioner, a certified health and wellness coach, and has experience working with a variety of orthopedic and women’s health conditions.

Lymphedema and Pelvic Health Services in Annapolis!

Fitness Forum in Annapolis has expanded its services to include Pelvic Floor Therapy and Lymphedema Management.

Both men and women can experience issues related to their pelvic floor. The pelvic floor is a group of muscles located at the base of the pelvis that support and hold organs like the bladder, uterus (in females), and rectum in place, essentially acting as a “hammock” to help control bladder and bowel function, as well as playing a role in sexual function; it stretches from the pubic bone in the front to the tailbone at the back, and can be strengthened through exercises to prevent incontinence or other issues related to weakened pelvic floor muscles.

Lymphedema is chronic swelling due to excess fluid buildup in the lymphatic system. This can be hereditary, but it can also occur following surgery, cancer treatment, radiation, injury, or age.

All is not lost. We can help you manage and reduce the swelling, so you can enjoy your life and succeed in your daily activities.
